With the recent trend of the global economic recession and lack of productivity, it is required that a driving force be found to overcome such a situation. Therefore, it is necessary to create an industrial environment to maximize automation and connectivity SW innovation, AI, etc. In this environment, the boarder between the academic and the technological fields is becoming vague, and the two fields are being merged into one. In this era of technological
revolution, we need to develop novel type of education and learning system to adapt for the rapid technological transition. In this environment, specialized SW ability encompassing knowledge of both fields is requested to solve some proposed problems.
To this end, Tongmyong University will, provide interdisciplinary SW education on top of close industry-academy cooperation based on successful experience of various governmental projects to develop innovative education.

(Education system) Triple-helix type new model Establishment of the College of SW Convergence

  • Establishment of the College of SW Convergence. The number of faculty members is going to increase from 37 to 45 (two professors from Delhi University in 2019; dedicated to practical English education and start-up guidance)
  • The new students who are admitted according to specific criteria of SW talents will be provided with full scholarship from 2020.
  • A networking pool for the industrial-academic faculty members (employees of companies) has been established(100persons) → Will be teaching the Industrial-academic convergence courses.
  • Advancement of the Industrial-Academic Unity educational system → Establish a leading model for a SW-centered university that contributes to the region.

(Major education) Industrial-Academic Unity, borderless IAL2 platform to provide problem-solving type SW education

  • A Department – B Department / Select the themes for the classes that dismantle the border between the university and the industries and are based on the issues in the local community → The industries, students, and faculty members cooperate to solve these problems in our problem-solving type education(IAL2, Industry-Academy Living LAB) that we will introduce.
  • SW Field Semester System – Mandatory field training in connection with Capstone Design
  • Facilitation of entrepreneurship through the practical entrepreneurship education → Operation of TU Honors Club → English education for SW majors in cooperation with global companies (Amazon) → Start-up fund support(300 mill. in 2020) → Cultivate one Start-up company(Silicon Valley in 2021)

(Convergence Education) Strengthen the SW Convergence Education for the Innovation of the Strategic Local Industries

  • Mandatory SW Education for all students (4 credits) → Problem Solving with SW, Python Programming Education
  • Newly established six majors that are connected with SWs(2019) (Intelligent Machines, IoT, Management, Maritime Logistics, Construction Engineering, Tourism) → Reinforcing the local innovation competency for the 4th Industrial Revolution
  • TU Mashup LAB(24H OPEN) → Expanded the Operation of the Multi-major Convergence Capstone Design

(Proliferation of Values) Proliferation of the digital language through the online education contents and the TU makers

  • Expansion of K-MOOC, KOCW online education contents → Train local digital leaders
  • TU Maker (3rd floor of the Youth Creation Powerhouse) → SW value proliferation program (elementary/middle/high schools, teachers, career-disconnected women, baby boomers) → Performing the local co-existence responsibilities for the university through SW education.
  • Proceed with the projects to solve the problems in the local community through participation by the local residents, → Invigorating the local SW community.
This project is joined by 34 partner companies/organizations such as Tmax Data Co., Ltd., GT1 Co., Ltd. Tobe Soft Co., Ltd. SawWave Co., Ltd., 유비디지전, CodeFarm Co., Ltd., Control Korea Co., Ltd., Busan Office of Education, City of Busan, and Japanese Consulate, etc., as well as five SW-related departments (Computer Engineering, Game Engineering, Information Security, School of Digital Medial Engineering, and Information and Communication Engineering), and six other related departments (Smart Port logistics, tourism and convention/MICE, construction BIM, intelligent machines, embedded IoT, and business administration Big Data), for an industrial-academic cooperation program, through which we will do our best to take a grand leap forward to become the innovative university to train borderless SW talents based on industrial-academic unity.
